The Growing Process

A lot of love and attention goes into growing the plants in our Plant Tiles.

  • STEP 1: Our seed sourced from Australia, France and Germany

    Surprisingly, there aren’t many seed producers for perennials in Australia, so much of our seed is sourced from France or Germany.

    Our seeds have been selected for their low growing features (generally up to 75 mm in height), their suitability to the Australian climate, their ability to grow in diminished light if needed, and of course, their beauty as plants!

    Our seeds are then sent to the Netherlands for coating. This process coats the seeds in bright yellow, which increases their size, thereby facilitating ease of handling.

  • STEP 2: Precision Seeding Equipment from Italy

    Our seeds are ‘sown’ using our state of the art seeding equipment.It’s a complicated process, but suffice to say, our seeds are given lots of TLC!

  • STEP 3: Next to the germination room

    Our seeded Plant Tiles go from the seeding room to the germination room, where they spend 4 – 10 days in climatically controlled temperatures to maximize germination.

  • STEP 4: From there, it’s on to our computer controlled greenhouse

    Our greenhouse, clad in twin walled polycarbonate, is pretty high tech and the systems within are controlled by computer.  Evaporatively cooled air is pulled through the greenhouse by large fans to cool the growing environment, solar screens that open and close to deflect the high levels of UV light in summer and trap accumulated energy in the greenhouse over winter.

    Vents in the roof open and close automatically in response to changes in temperature and humidity within  the greenhouse and wind direction outside the greenhouse. Circulation fans within the greenhouse keep the air mass circulating to ensure a constant temperature throughout the growing zones.

  • STEP 5: Irrigation water (rainwater) for our greenhouse is captured from the roof and stored in tanks on site.

    At approximately 15 weeks, our plants have grown to the stage where they are ready to move to the ‘hardening area’ – where they are acclimatised to life out of the greenhouse! They’re then ready to be packed up and sent to you!

  • STEP 6: To protect our plants, we designed our own trays.

    Our trays, like our products, are unique and are created using an injection moulding process. The legs of the trays are designed specifically to protect the Living Tiles in transport.

    Your plants will be delivered in great condition!
